Matching Gift Doubles Donations to Support HUGS Program

Oct 30, 2020

Update, Dec. 7, 2020:  Thanks to our community’s commitment to funding student archaeologists from underrepresented groups, SAA met our $5,000 goal to match Meg Conkey’s generous gift, raising a combined $10,000+ for the HUGS program. What an amazing response from 100+ donors. Thank you!

There are many challenges facing student archaeologists, especially in today’s pandemic world, and SAA past president and 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Meg Conkey would like to help. She has pledged to match gifts to the Historically Underrepresented Groups Scholarships (HUGS) program up to $5,000.

That would be $10,000 the SAA will use to fund student archaeologists from underrepresented groups at a time when diversity is more vital to the field than ever, but funding is less secure.

Since the first scholarships were awarded in 2015, HUGS has supported the education of 20 archaeology students, allowing them to gain valuable professional experience in field schools and to conduct research. Support for HUGS is sustained by individual donations from members like you.

Diversity of narratives and heritage is a core principle of archaeological ethics. Please donate today if you are up for the challenge of making sure HUGS can grow and expand.
