Statement on Nondisclosure Agreements in Archaeological Contracts (2026)
Private and public industry clients are increasingly requiring applied archaeologists to sign nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) as part of contracting processes. There are legitimate business reasons to use these agreements, but NDAs can allow business interests to privatize cultural resources, which could unduly impact the creation of public heritage. Archaeologists should ensure that the products of their work become part of the scientific discourse and inform respectful stewardship of the past.
