SAA Supports All Archaeologists and Archaeology Students
The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) does not maintain any membership categories, divisions, or benefits that are restricted on the basis of race or any other protected characteristic. All SAA memberships, programs, and committee participation opportunities are open to individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, or other protected status.
The SAA also honors the Donor Bill of Rights (see https://afpglobal.org/donor-bill-rights). As ethical stewards of charitable contributions, the SAA must comply with donor intentions to support scholarships and awards whose gifts support students and professionals whose experience and participation broaden, strengthen, and expand the field of archaeology.
Donors have funded several scholarships and awards to specific groups, and these programs are solely funded through these separately raised donations and endowments, not through membership dues or general operating revenue. These opportunities are designed in accordance with applicable federal guidance on inclusive outreach and are not race-restrictive or gender-restrictive. Many of these awards consider a broad set of factors—academic interests, service, career goals, commitments to underrepresented communities, and financial need—and do not require membership in any race-defined group as a condition of eligibility.
