Magazines and Journals about Archaeology

Several popular and readily available magazines regularly publish well-researched and well-written articles about archaeology. Archaeology magazine (published bimonthly) is filled with articles, book and film reviews, travel and exhibition news, and regular columns on archaeological topics. Other magazines frequently publish articles on archaeological topics: National Geographic (monthly), Natural History (bimonthly), Scientific American (monthly), and Smithsonian (bimonthly). Of special interest for younger readers are the children's magazines Cobblestone, Dig! Magazine for children, and Faces, all of which have devoted issues to archaeology and archaeological topics. All these magazines are available from booksellers and at local libraries throughout the United States.

There also are a large number of more specialized archaeological journals. For example, in most states and Canadian provinces there are archaeological organizations whose members are particularly interested in the archaeology of their area. Members include both full-time professional archaeologists and those who are interested in archaeology as an avocation or hobby. Typically, these organizations publish a quarterly journal about archaeological investigations and research within the state or province.

In addition there are a number of regional journals that publish articles about American archaeology, comments or opinions on archaeological topics, and reviews of archaeological books. They include Arctic Anthropology, Kiva, The Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology, Northwest Anthropology, Plains Anthropologist, and Southeastern Archaeology. Many of the articles in these journals are detailed and technical, but they will provide readers with an up-to-date view of the American archaeology scene.

National journals include American Antiquity, Canadian Journal of Anthropology, Historical Archaeology, Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, Journal of Field Archaeology, and North American Archaeologist. International journals that regularly publish articles on American archaeology include Ancient Mesoamerica, Antiquity, Journal of World Prehistory, International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Latin American Antiquity, and World Archaeology.

While these more technical journals will not be found in every local library, they typically are available in university libraries or large public libraries. Interested readers also may be able to obtain copies through interlibrary loan programs. Consult your local librarian for help.
