Contacts about Archaeology

Every state and territory and the District of Columbia has an official historic preservation officer who has information about regional and local archaeological programs. A State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), who frequently is associated with a state museum or historical society, usually can be located under state-government listings in the telephone directory. A listing of SHPOs is available from

the National Conference of SHPOs
444 North Capitol Street N.W.

Washington, D.C. 20001-1512
Tel: (202) 624-5465

Many states have state archaeologists, and federal agencies have regional, state, and local offices with staffs that can provide archaeological information.

A list of Federal and Tribal Historic Preservation Officers is available from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
