Society for American Archaeology joins with the University of Maryland to offer training.

The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) has recently announced a partnership with the University of Maryland's Office of Continuing and Extended Education (OCEE). This partnership will offer part of the professional training at the society's 66th annual meeting taking place April 18-21, 2001 in New Orleans, Louisiana. SAA has designated OCEE as a nonexclusive continuing education provider for SAA events and seminars. Keith Kintigh, President of SAA, stated, "We are quite excited about this partnership because it will allow SAA to provide its members with important new opportunities for professional development."

In New Orleans, OCEE will conduct two sessions: an intensive eight-hour workshop on Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, and a three-hour workshop on government contract proposal writing. At the GIS workshop, attendees will learn about a technology that presents data both graphically and spatially and allows for overlaying several layers of map data, defining the relationship between the data sets. At the second workshop, attendees will learn how to write and manage government contracts.

The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) is an international organization dedicated to the research, interpretation, and protection of the archaeological heritage of the Americas. With more than 6,500 members, the society represents professional, student, and avocational archaeologists working in a variety of settings including government agencies, colleges and universities, museums, and the private sector. SAA's annual meeting attracts more than 2,800 archaeologists from around the world.
