Public Education Events Planned for Hovey Lake, Indiana
Plans are being finalized for a series of public events during the month of September that are related to ongoing research at the Hovey Lake archaeological site (http://www.indiana.edu/~archaeo/hovey/), in Posey County, west of Evansville, Indiana. The combined program of archaeological research and public education is focused at a late Mississippian village site and funded by the federal Transportation Enhancement grant program and contributions. The research involves geophysical surveys and test excavations to better understand the village plan and the array of features on both sides of an existing state highway. The public education component continues the tradition of Archaeology Month: fourth-grade class visits (Sept. 8-17), a public lecture (date to be announced), and a weekend Excavation Open House (Sept. 25-26). The University of Southern Indiana, University of Evansville, and several regional historic organizations will join Indiana University in co-sponsoring and presenting the education programs. For further information: e-mail munsonc@indiana.edu.

Massachusetts Archaeology Week Expands to Full Month
Massachusetts’s annual celebration of archaeological heritage will expand to a month-long event in October. The change comes in response to requests from event attendees and sponsors who wanted more time to attend the over 60 quality events held each year throughout the state. The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) hopes that the change will make planning of future events easier. Also new this year, MHC will provide teachers with an Archaeology Month preview via email in June so that more schools can take advantage of field trip opportunities and teacher-enrichment programs. To sign up for the teacher preview or to request a calendar of events, contact Ann-Eliza Lewis at Ann-Eliza.Lewis@state.ma.us or see the MHC’s website at www.state.ma.us/sec/mhc.

Indiana Archaeology Month Set For September
September 2004 will be the 9th annual Indiana Archaeology Month. Coordinated by the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA), the event gets bigger each year. Numerous archaeology events of various types are available around the state, and they offer many types of opportunities to become involved in archaeology. There will be a commemorative poster, educational materials, and much more available. Indiana Archaeology Month is the state’s most comprehensive yearly archaeology outreach event. Check out the Indiana Archaeology Month web page at www.IN.gov/dnr/historic/archeomonth/home.htm for further information, including the complete calendar of events.
