ARCHAEOLOGY WEEKS/MONTHS

Toltec Mounds Hosts Archeology Camp for Kids
Children in grades 4-7 can learn about the science of archaeology in Archeology Camp, June 11-14, at Toltec Mounds Archeological Park, outside Little Rock, Arkansas. Camp participants will learn about excavation and laboratory techniques, and tour the mound site. On July 19, children ages 8 and up can participate in Excavators of the Past, a one-day program about archaeology and site protection. Dickson Mounds Features Two Special Exhibits
Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown, Illinois, will provide the public with a rare opportunity to view a collection of 2,000-year-old ceramic figures from West Mexican tombs, through March 31. Depicting musicians, warriors, ball players, animals, and ceremonial scenes, these sculptures have long fascinated the public. Then, beginning April 7, visitors to the museum can view famous engravings of works created by Karl Bodmer in the early 1830s, including images of Native Americans. Arkansas To Celebrate Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial in 2003
The Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial will be celebrated in Arkansas in 2003. The official web site includes information about the Louisiana Purchase survey, as well as information on events and suggestions for teachers on how to include this historic celebration in classroom activities. Colorado Sets Archaeology Month for May
The Colorado Historical Society will sponsor Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month during May throughout the state to celebrate Colorado’s rich archaeological and historical heritage. The theme for 2002 is Remembering Colorado’s Past, Looking to our Future. For more information, check the web site at www.coloradohistory-oahp.org/whatsnew/ahpm.htm.

Southwest Georgia Featured for Archaeology Month
Georgia Archaeology Month 2002 will be held in May. The theme for the event is Discover the Prehistoric Southwest: Southwest Georgia. The spring meeting of the Society for Georgia Archaeology, principal sponsor of this event, will be held the last weekend in April at Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park in Blakely, Georgia, and will kick off the month-long promotion. Idaho Sets Archaeology/Historic Preservation Month for May
Idaho Archaeology Month has joined forces with Preservation Idaho to expand public outreach on archaeology, history, architectural history and preservation by creating Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month, which will be celebrated in May. Keeping in the spirit of working together, the theme for this year’s event is Preserving the Spirit of Place, which also is the theme for National Historic Preservation Week. Arkansas Archeology Month Selects Ceramics for Theme
Arkansas Archeology Month 2002 will be held in October. The theme for this year’s event will focus on ceramic art and technology, and will be titled Made From Clay: Cooking & Craftsmanship.
