Society for American Archaeology Student Portal
In 1989, a special committee, chaired by Rachel Hamilton, was established by the SAA Board of Directors to explore the possible organization of a student division within the society. Out of this work, a standing committee was developed for student affairs with the goals of increasing student membership and providing workshops for students on topics such as publishing and grant proposal writing. Rachel was the first chair of the committee and Jeremy Sabloff was the first Board liaison to the committee. Since that time, Paul Takac and Alicia Wise have served as chairs and Katherina Schreiber and Barbara Stark as Executive Board liaisons. The overall goals of the committee remain the same:
- To integrate students into the Society for American Archaeology.
- To provide information that will aid students in their educational and professional careers.
- To give a voice to the student membership of the SAA.
The Committee Today
The Student Affairs Committee is now composed of seven members (including a chair and a vice chair), a Board liaison, and a network of campus representatives across the world. We are constantly looking for eager and energetic archaeologists to help us further our goals and expand the services of the student affairs committee.
Each year, the Committee meets officially at the SAA Annual Meeting to discuss the year's activities, make announcements, appoint new members, and plan for the coming year.
Campus Representatives Network
Campus Representatives disseminate information between the SAA Student Affairs Committee and the student body at the campus representative's home institution. It is a goal of the Student Affairs Committee is to recruit campus representatives from every university where there are student archaeologists in residence at the graduate and/or undergraduate level. Representatives must be/become members of the Society for American Archaeology and be willing to serve for at least one year. The Student Affairs Committee communicates most often through electronic mail and strongly encourages campus representatives to attend our own annual meeting during the SAA Annual Meeting.
The idea is that campus representatives represent the Student Affairs Committee at other meetings and conferences, keep contact with other SAA committee members or liaisons in their home state or country, and assist in recruiting successors and/or students from other institutions. A working familiarity with SAA guidelines, missions, projects, and activities allows campus representatives to keep in touch with the society's goals and let others know what those goals are. The SAC maintains a facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1412806338932108. This is a great way to keep in touch with your questions, comments, calls for papers, anything that you feel needs to be shared with the student community.
Student Affairs in the Future
The Student Affairs Committee continues to grow and expand its endeavors. At each Annual Meeting, the Committee organizes at least one session designed specifically for students. Students make up approximately 27 percent of the SAA membership. You can do your part by becoming involved or letting us know how we can better meet your needs as a student member of the Society.
Student and New Member Reception
Each year the SAA Board sponsors a welcoming reception, usually on the opening night (Wednesday) of the Annual Meeting. The reception is FREE and provides a wonderful chance to meet members of the Executive Board, student affairs committee, SAA headquarters staff, and other important people. It's an event well worth your time!
